Event overview
Come hear Egyptian refugee lawyer Ashraf Milad Ruxi discuss the current Egyptian refugee context and the challenges of helping those affected by the crises in Sudan and Gaza.
Humanitarians in Egypt currently face acute challenges and complex political dilemmas arising from ongoing wars and atrocities in Sudan and Gaza. They also have extensive historical and recent experiences of responding to successive conflicts and crises on and within their borders, and to the precarious situations of refugees and migrants.
In this seminar, Ashraf Milad Ruxi will offer a reflection on Egypt’s current situation as a host state for refugees and on the lessons of past experiences and struggles. In conversation, he is also open to discussing his personal achievements in defending the rights of Sudanese refugees, including in asylum claims and strategic litigation at the African Union, and his work for international organisations, including UNDP, UNHCR and OHCHR, in the MENA region.
Mr Ruxi will be in conversation with Dr Rachel Ibreck, senior lecturer in the Department of Politics
Mr Ruxi is an asylum lawyer and lecturer currently serving as a legal advisor for Tadamon Multicultural Refugee Council in Cairo and for local NGOs in Cairo, Egypt. He is also an Expert Member of the Working Group on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights in Africa at the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights. He holds an MA in Human Rights and Democratization (University of Malta) & MA in Forced Migration and Refugee Studies (the American University in Cairo).
Dr Rachel Ibreck is a senior lecturer in the Department of Politics at Goldsmiths and the author of the book, South Sudan’s Injustice System: Law and Activism on the Frontline (Zed Books, 2019). Her work explores the politics of human rights, justice and memory in Africa, focusing on sites of atrocity, conflict, and displacement, including in Rwanda, South Sudan, and Egypt.
