History on Film: Coming Out (1989) With Refreshments and Q&A
Please join us for a screening of Coming Out (1989) a "landmark work of gay cinema" (David Hall). The first and only feature film produced by the East German state-owned DEFA studios, the film premiered on November 9, 1989 - the night the Berlin wall came down. Telling the story of a young teacher coming to terms with his sexuality in East Berlin, the film presents an honest and still-relevant depiction of the difficulties faced by LGBTQ+ people worldwide. Filmed on location in East Berlin, it includes a fascinating insight into the visual landscape of queer culture in late socialism.
CONTENT NOTE: This film includes some scenes depicting racist violence and language.
