Event overview
Music by Fanny Hensel - 1 composer, 14 musicians, 25 premieres.
Join us in Deptford Town Hall for an evening of songs by Fanny Hensel, whose works were overshadowed by her brother, Felix Mendelssohn. During her impressive musical life, Fanny composed nearly 250 songs for solo voice and piano, setting texts in German, French, Italian and English. Singer and researcher Tim Parker-Langston's PhD project is on this amazing composer, and he created 'Hensel Songs Online', an open access resource that shares the scores for all of Fanny Hensel’s near 250 songs for the first time, #HENSEL is an advocacy project with a mission to record all the unsung songs from Hensel’s repertoire (over 100).
To date, including the release of the album Hensel: Lieder (First Hand Records), the project has brought 55 of these songs to audiences for the first time. After today’s concert, this number will be 79! The remaining songs are planned for recording in the coming months and will be shared online.
Free, all welcome
