"There is no method to the movement of thought. And there is no way of knowing, for sure, that learning has taken place. Nor is there a way of being sure that anything has landed, or that something was relevant. The best we can hope for is that the anarchic share of a movement of thought will germinate, somewhere. What is policed and weaponized in the name of the credits we bestow (in exchange for debt, which will also be credited), is the unquantifiable at the heart of learning." Manning, Parapedagies of Resistance
"Thinking is a mode. It is a mode of activity whose qualities and function vary along a spectrum, every band of which is in reciprocal presupposition – complex, mutually modulating co-relation – with each other and with other spectra of life activity, actual and potential. It is integrally implicated in life activity. It not just a mode of activity, it is a mode of life. Like every mode of life, it is in continual variation, and generates emergent properties." Massumi, What Thinking Does
At a time of planetary upheaval and institutional collapse, the Centre for Critical Global Change at Goldsmiths is delighted to invite you to a symposium with Erin Manning & Brian Massumi, to discuss their ongoing work on speculative pragmatism and parapedagogies of resistance. This will be a discussion-based event and attendants are kindly asked to read the texts in advance of the meeting, so they can participate fully in the discussion (texts can be accessed here).
Erin Manning studies the interstices of philosophy, aesthetics and politics, concerned, always, about alter-pedagogical and alter-economic practices. Pedagogical experiments are central to her work, some of which occur at Concordia University in Montreal where she is a research chair in Speculative Pragmatism, Art and Pedagogy in the Faculty of Fine Arts. Recent monographs include The Minor Gesture (Duke 2016), For a Pragmatics of the Useless (2020) and Out of the Clear (minor compositions 2022).
Brian Massumi is a Canadian philosopher and social theorist, and, until recently, Professor of Communication at the University of Montreal. He is the author of many books, including Couplets: Travels in Speculative Pragmatism (Duke University Press, 2021), 99 Thesis on the Revaluation of Value: A Postcapitalist Manifesto (University of Minnesota Press, 2018), What Animals Teach Us about Politics (Duke University Press, 2014), and Parables of the Virtual: Movement, Affect, Sensation (Duke University Press, 2011). He has translated Gilles Deleuze & Félix Guattari's A Thousand Plateaus: Capitalism and Schizophrenia.
