Language education in diverse communities: Ethics, multilingualism and teacher professionalism
Ethnolinguistic diversity is ever-present in many communities across the world. For example, 39.9% of the people of London are of Asian, Black and Mixed backgrounds (UK Census, 2021); 22% of school students are users/learners of English as an additional language (EAL) in England (1.6 million) (DfE, 2022). Educational response to diversity is a key challenge in our time.
In this talk I will focus on the ways in which additional/second language teacher knowledge has changed over time, paying particular attention to the disciplinary content bases, and the likely influences of current research in ethics and applied linguistics on our understanding of EAL and multilingualism. The overall purpose is to provide a coherent view on the assemblage of professional knowledge and skills for practice in light of the continuously evolving ethical sensibilities and disciplinary concerns, and its implications for the principal components underlying the development of teacher professionalism in contemporary settings.
Talk offered by the Centre for Multilingualism with English https://multilingualismwithenglish.org/ and the Centre for Language Culture and Learning https://www.gold.ac.uk/clcl/
