Event overview
Dr Rachael Elward, London South Bank University, will present her work on Learning and Memory in Developmental Amnesia.
Goldsmiths Psychology Department is delighted to welcome Dr Rachael Elward to give the second of our seminar series for 2024-25, focusing on memory problems in children.
Abstract: Developmental amnesia (DA) is a memory disorder caused by hippocampal injury during early development. Children with DA experience lifelong impairments in episodic memory; they cannot recall important personal events (such as birthdays and holidays), yet they display a remarkable ability to acquire semantic memory (such as general knowledge and vocabulary). This talk will present data from a series of studies illustrating how DA emerges within the context of typical memory development, the challenges facing children with DA in education, and the ways in which they can be supported to keep up with peers. Finally, the talk will discuss the neural mechanisms underlying semantic learning in this group. These findings have implications for models of memory and educational neuroscience.
Biography: Rachael Elward is the Course Director for the BSc Psychology programme at London South Bank University and leads the Brain, Mind, and Behaviour Research Group. She completed her PhD at Cardiff's Brain Research Imaging Centre studying the cognitive neuroscience of learning and memory. She later held post-doctoral positions with Professor Mick Rugg at the University of Texas at Dallas and Professor Faraneh Vargha-Khadem at the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health where she began working with neuropsychological patients. Rachael’s research focuses on the cognitive neuroscience of memory development, particularly developmental amnesia. She is a member of the Memory Disorders Research Society.
