Event overview
To mark the national Being Human festival’s 10th anniversary, Goldsmiths have teamed up with the Horniman Museum & Gardens to co-curate a free museum late event
Join us for a night of free interactive experiences, installations and participatory performances at the Horniman Museum and Gardens, exploring how humans mark the land and how the land marks us.
From immersive mixed reality performances exploring human evolution, to a Caribbean crafting workshop responding to research on stored objects from the Horniman's collection, a series of interactive activities led by researchers at Goldsmiths, University of London and a performance from community partner, IRIE! dance theatre will explore themes of the Anthropocene, deep time, climate crisis, and indigenous ways of knowing:
Rag rug responses | Workshop | Rose Sinclair MBE
In this workshop you will learn to make your own section of rag rug, exploring sustainable Caribbean crafting practices alongside objects from the museum's handling collection.
Hinterlands | Mixed reality interactive performance | Created by Rebecca Evans/Pell Ensemble in collaboration with Lead Creative Technologist Clemence Debaig and team
Hinterlands is a participatory augmented reality dance performance inspired by microorganisms that live in some of earth’s most inhospitable environments.
Sonic postcards | Interactive, generative sound installation | Dr Marcus Leadley, Konstantinos Damianakis and Adam Barkely from Goldsmiths Electronic Music Studios
Draw your response to the Landmarks Late on a postcard. Once scanned and augmented it will add to an evolving soundscape based on field recordings made at the museum.
Groundation: Dancing from the archives | Drumming workshop and performance | IRIE! dance theatre
The UK’s leading company working in the field of African and Caribbean dance fusion will be performing an extract from Groundation, reflecting on 38 years of creative and performance history to explore the roots of the company.
Three conversations on Landmarks | Talks | Dr Becca Voelcker
BBC New Generation Thinker, Dr Becca Voelcker, leads three public conversations with key people involved in helping to shape the Horniman Museum and Garden’s transformational Nature and Love project, which includes the redisplay of the museum's famous Natural History gallery.
Sharing Lands and Sighting Landmarks | Interactive walking tour | Dr Padraig Kirwan
Dr Kirwan will lead an interactive walking tour of the museum's North American collection in the context of the intercultural connections between the Choctaw Nation and the Irish people.
