Event overview
Join us for a FREE rare screening of British cinema classic Flame in the Streets (1961), followed by a Q&A discussion on Tuesday 10 December. Popcorn is included.
In the run up to a Guy Fawkes’ night in early 1960s Britain, a progressive trade union leader passionately fights racial discrimination in his workplace, but is less stridently antiracist when his daughter brings home her Jamaican boyfriend.
With racist rioting one of the film's major subplots, alongside workplace discrimination, trade union politics, housing discrimination, and many facets of UK racism at the time, revisiting Flame in the Streets’ depiction (rather than necessarily a true glimpse) of the environment many Windrush migrants entered, offers an opportunity to reflect on the echoes and recurrences in our own time. Come for the film, stay for the conversation.
History on Film is a series of free monthly film screenings run by the history department at Goldsmiths. Join us on the second Tuesday evening of every month for great films from and/or about historical moments, expert panelists, and lively discussions accompanied by free popcorn.
Every other month the History on Film screening is Black history themed. The MA in Black British History at Goldsmiths is the first taught MA programme in the UK to focus exclusively on the histories of peoples of African origin and descent. Applications are now open for for September 2025 entry. The early bird deadline for applications is 28 February.
