Event overview
Panel discussion about the current, anti-government, student-led protest in Serbia and why the UK media are not reporting the event
What does it take for a revolution to become politically relevant globally?
Three months after a newly built Novi Sad train station canopy collapsed and killed 15 people in Novi Sad, Serbia, a growing tsunami of street protests led by students has spread across the country, among all generations and across political divides, resulting in the biggest demonstrations in Serbia’s turbulent history. While the country has seen a few protests in recent years, the current movement’s scale, its unprecedented hopefulness, and an unwavering feeling of solidarity are what make these protests a hopeful moment that promises to put an end to corruption and heal ideological divisions.
Yet, the mainstream media in the UK and beyond have been, until very recently, completely silent. Have they been following the lead of the official Serbian government’s mouthpiece or could there be other reasons why they have been shying away from reporting on this beacon of hope for democracy, which seems to be healing divides across former Yugoslav countries?
Joining us at the event are Serbian student representatives via weblink; Andjela Milivojevic, Goldsmiths alumni and investigative journalist who specializes in exposing crime and corruption, and Professor Des Freedman, whose research centres on the relationship between media and power. The discussion is moderated by Marina Zec, a postgraduate student at Goldsmiths and PhD student at the Faculty of Dramatic Arts (FDU) in Belgrade where the protests were instigated.
The event is organised by the Centre for the Studies of the Balkans and supported by the Centre of Global Media and Democracy, Media Forum, and the Student Union.
