Two-day workshop exploring the architecture of conversion in early modern Europe.
The two-day workshop brings together leading and emerging scholars in the fields of archaeology, literary studies, theatre studies, history and art history to explore the architecture of conversion in early modern Europe. Speakers include Harriet Lyon, Callan Davies, Abigail Shinn, Stewart Mottram, John Schofield, Andrew Spicer, Jaap Geraerts and Róisín Watson. A plenary paper will be given by Antonio Urquizar Herrer (UNED Madrid), author of Admiration and Awe: Morisco Buildings and Identity Negotiations in Early Modern Spanish Historiography (OUP, 2017). Themes covered include the dissolution of the monasteries; clandestine churches in Holland; the conversion of Erfurt's synagogue; the use of Catholic churches by Reformed Protestants in France; the role of monastic reuse in the development of theatre culture and its appearance in poetry; and the conversion of monastic buildings into courtier's residences. The event is sponsored by the Society for Renaissance Studies and is free to attend.
The workshop takes place at Goldsmiths, University of London 10-11 April 2025. Richard Hoggart Building, room 137.
