Event overview
The process of making Rainbow Rishta challenges the stereotype of small-town India as more regressive than cities for livable sexualities and queer lives.
Working on Rainbow Rishta, filmmaker Jaydeep Sarkar uncovered an unexpected truth: small-town India can at times be more open to queer lives than large cities. Speaking about his experience of discovering these stories, Jaydeep provocatively asks: While the queer rights movement has largely been shaped by western pride ideologies, there are also other public queer practices found within a plurality of South Asian cultures.
Filmmaker and writer Jaydeep Sarkar has written films such as Khoya Khoya Chand, Shaurya and Nayantara's Necklace. Rainbow Rishta was nominated for a 2024 GLAAD Award. In 2024, Jaydeep was recognised as a BAFTA Breakthrough Artist.
