Event overview
Goldsmiths Anthropology Society: Savage Mondays
A documentary which tells the story of two groups of steel workers in Sheffield, during the closure of one of their firms. "...Mollona captures details of shopfloor relationships and craft processes but looks beyond the technology for social and political implications. He refuses any generalised nostalgic story of vanishing `working class culture' and shows instead a varied and living complex of traditions, ideas and responses to the present world. He emphasisses the differences between the kinds of jobs and firms which make up the remnants of the steel industry. The resulting picture questions economic received wisdom about progress and decline. If change is driven by technological improvements, why has a workship using equipment from the nineteenth century survived, while a modern mini-mill must close?"
