Title: Psychological functions of emotion regulation
Abstract:
A large and growing body of research has shown that people invest a great deal of time and efforts in controlling and regulating their emotions. It is thus clear that emotion regulation is important to people. But why is emotion regulation important? In the present talk, I propose that emotion regulation serves three major psychological functions. First, emotion regulation may promote the satisfaction of hedonic needs that are aimed at promoting pleasure and preventing pain. Second, emotion regulation may support the attainment of specific goals, norms, or tasks. Third, emotion regulation may maintain the integrity of global personality functioning. I will provide empirical demonstrations of each function of emotion regulation. In addition, I suggest that distinguishing between different functions of emotion regulation may allow us to understand when emotion regulation is more or less psychologically adaptive.
