Event overview
Synopsis of film: 'Renata’s Family’, by Lia Philcox, ©2009.
Is this the last resort of an eccentric Czech ex-pat artist, living out a psychedelic fantasy of animistic beliefs and exotic spirituality by a Goan beach, or a micro-society based on sustainable material and spiritual relations with the environment, with a little help from their friends?
Renata believes that her grandmother’s spirit inhabits her canine companion, Pepinka. Pepinka’s offspring now number 21, comprising, along with 5 chickens and a small cat, Renata’s family. Generally harmonious, occasionally chaotic, and often comical, their low-tech life confronts notions of civilisation and reality. This collaborative film is an experimental representation of Renata’s world
Lia Philcox completed a BA in Anthropology/Communications (joint degree), and an MA in Visual Anthropology, both at Goldsmiths, 1995-99. She has tutored in the department as is currently in the writing- and editing-up stage of her PhD.
