As part of an fellowship in the performative and creative arts, Tony Dowmunt research is large part practical, involving him with his own filmmaking projects: " I thought it was important that I look into my own filmic background as part of my autobiographical research – to get an idea of how I have portrayed myself, and have been portrayed, in still and moving photographic images over the years."

A contemporary, autobiographical video diary film in which I re-trace the steps of my great-grandfather. He was a soldier in the imperial army in Sierra Leone in the 1880s, and wrote his own diary while hewas there, which I use as my source. I visit some of the places he saw, andsome descendants of people he met, in a search for traces of the imperialistpast in my and Africa's present.

Tony Dowmunt is the Course Convenor for Goldsmiths MA Screen Documentary, and recently completed a Fellowship in the Creative and Performing Arts, funded by the AH RC. His Fellowship was a project investigating autobiographical documentary and the video diary form, in both theory and practice.
Previously, as well as teaching, he worked as a television Producer/Director for twenty five years, and as a community media activist. His most recent work involved innovative arts documentaries. His other research interests include 'alternative media' and the growing field of practice research in the moving image. He is a founder member of the steering group of AVPhD, a training organisation for all those involved in audio-visual practice/research doctorates.
