Lawrence Upton "Self, Expression"
All welcome
Lawrence Upton is a solo and collaborative poet; a sound & graphic artist & performer; and occasional story-writer. He was Head of Academic Computing, at an F.E. college 1992-1996. From 1997 until 2008 he was a freelance artist and speaker.
In the 1970s, Upton made text-sound composition and live sound / recorded sound / visual image hybrid performances at the studio of Fylkingen in Stockholm. He co-founded (with cris cheek and P C Fencott) the group "jgjgjg", making a capella multi-voice performances. He worked with cheek and Erik Vonna-Michell in "Bang Crash Wallop" and other groupings in Greater London. Thereafter, he worked, for some years, collaboratively and solo, making live sound / recorded sound hybrid works at West Square Studio and in giving live performances. He performed at International Sound Poetry Festivals in Stockholm, London and Toronto.
In the 1980s, he worked with, firstly, Alice Blommor; and then Lilian Ward (1949-1991), performing as "The Great Escapists". He had a solo exhibition of graphic works at LYC Museum & Art Gallery in Cumbria. From 1991, he worked with Bob Cobbing (1920-2002), producing 12 publications, one of which is the 300 part Domestic Ambient Noise (1994 - 2000 Writers Forum), and giving countless performances. Throughout this time, he continued his solo practice as well as collaborating with other artists, most notably with Alaric Sumner (1952-2000).
In the first half of this decade, he lived in west Cornwall, commuting regularly to London and visiting Canada and USA. He edited Sumner's artistic remains for publication and exhibition. Since 2003, he has been making multi-media pieces involving dance, film and electro-acoustic music, particularly with John Levack Drever.
