'After Darwin: Contemporary Expressions'
In this exhibition, existing and newly commissioned art works and literature are brought together to re-examine human-animal kinship in light of Darwin’s publication 'The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals' (1872). It is the latest in the Museum’s contemporary arts programme, testing the contemporary relevance of a scientific idea. I will particularly discuss the background of the commission by Diana Thater 'gorillagoriallgorilla'.
BERGIT ARENDS
Bergit Arends has been Curator of Contemporary Arts at the Natural History Museum since September 2005. She recently commissioned artist Tania Kovats to create 'TREE', a permanent installation for the Museum’s Central Hall to mark Charles Darwin’s bicentenary, and 'After Darwin: Contemporary Expressions'. Other exhibitions at the Museum include 'Mark Dion: Systema Metropolis', 'The Ship: The Art of Climate Change'.
