Event overview
Goldsmiths Literature Seminar
Kristin Ewins
One of the first mentions of 'middlebrow' in print appeared in the satirical magazine Punch in 1925, describing 'a new type', supposedly discovered by the BBC, made up of 'people who are hoping that some day they will get used to the stuff they ought to like'. Derided by Virginia Woolf and other proud highbrows, middlebrow fiction and art were popular and reflected the average tastes of the middle classes. This paper will look at leftist appropriations of the middlebrow mode, and how Winifred Holtby in particular negotiated socialist convictions and middle-class values in her major work of the 1930s.
