Event overview
As part of the Visual Cultures MA Guest Lecture Series, visual artist Del LaGrace Volcano will be delivering a lecture on intersex bodies. ***Please note the earlier time!
How are intersex bodies represented in art and culture? What accounts for the disparity in status between the hermaphrodite in art and the intersexed in contemporary society? As the current gender crisis around the South African athlete Caster Semenya demonstrates, we are no closer to consensus on what constitutes the truth of the sexed body than we have ever been. This presentation will show precisely how and why INTERSEX MATTERS and one artist’s mission (im)possible.
Del LaGrace Volcano
Visual artist who seeks to disrupt and trouble socio-cultural binaries using visceral pleasure and political provocation as primary strategies of resistance. Volcano has produced five photographic monographs in the past twenty years, independently and in collaboration with queer academics such as Judith Halberstam, Ulrika Dahl, Jay Prosser and Beatriz Preciado.
Please join us after Del LaGrace Volcano's talk for a drinks reception and launch of publications and exhibition 'Transforming Practices' in RHB 300 from 5 to 7pm, part of a two-day event organised by the MA Laboratories Contemporary Art Theory and Aural & Visual Cultures.
