Event overview
As part of the Visual Cultures Guest Lecture Series, Lara Shalson will present a paper titled, "Enduring Objecthood".
This paper considers how anxieties about 'objecthood' shape both art historical and performance studies discourses on viewer-artwork relations. Taking Yoko Ono’s 1964 performance "Cut Piece" as a central example, this talk will explore how a theory of endurance reshapes such discourses, enabling us to think differently about the terms through which we describe viewer-artwork relations, including 'audience participation' and 'objectification'. In the process, this paper will offer an alternative to reified interpretations of Yoko Ono’s canonical performance art piece.
LARA SHALSON is a Lecturer in Theatre and Performance Studies in the Department of English at King’s College London. Her research focuses on performance and live art, gender and sexuality, and performance in the social world. Lara is currently writing a book about the performance of endurance across a range of art and political contexts, from civil rights protests to performance art.
