Event overview
Alexander Ivashkin will present a recital 'Russian Cello' with Russian born, Paris-based pianist Mikhail Rudy.
The programme will include Sergei Prokofiev's Cello Sonata ( 1949) and Igor Stravinsky's 'Suite Italienne' (1932), both premiered by two great Russian cellists - Mstislav Rostropovich and Gregor (Grigory) Piatigorsky respectively. Mikhail Rudy, a world renown pianist, defected from the Soviet Union in the 1970s and settled in Paris, where his friend was great Russian painter Marc Chagall.
Alexander Ivashkin never officially left Russia, but worked in New Zealand in the 1990s and at Goldsmiths from 1999. A friend of Mstislav Rostropovich (1927 - 2007) , he brought the great cellist to Goldsmiths, where Rostropovich received a honorary doctoral degree and conducted a masterclass in 2000. Ivashkin is the Director of the Centre for Russian music, a home for the largest collection of Russian music (including the Prokofiev and the Schnittke archives) outside Russia.
On 20 September Ivashkin will perform in Paris in an inaugural concert of the Shostakovich Trio - a new group consisting of violinist Svatoslav Moroz (USA), pianist Dmitri Vinnik (Germany) and Ivashkin himself on cello.
The concert will take a place at Shostakovich Centre in Paris, under the patronage of the composer's widow, Irina. The programme includes both Shostakovich's Trios and his late masterpiece 'Seven Songs on Alexander Blok's poems' for soprano (Olga Diachkovskaya) and piano trio.
