Event overview
Presentations of recent research by David Cline and Pedro Alvarez, followed by engaging discussions.
David Cline: Change in Feldman's Graph Music
Despite similarities in the presentation of his graphs, investigation reveals considerable changes in Feldman's notation and his thinking about graph music over the seventeen years during which he produced these works. Many of the changes are apparent from a comparison between his first graph, "Projection 1" (1950) for cello, and his last graph, "In Search of an Orchestration" (1967) for orchestra.
Pedro Alvarez: "Interalia": colliding structures and musical remnants
This work, composed in early 2010, will be discussed in order to explain some of my current creative concerns, especially regarding the layering of structures which determine several aspects of musical material in such a way that the final result is regarded as just a remnant of the many colliding poietic forces involved in the compositional process. This approach, in conjunction with a rather violent fragmentation of the musical flow, is understood as an attempt to avoid a 'narrative'- or 'dramatic'-like flow of music.
