Abstract:
In his lectures on metaphysics, Adorno argues that it is in the question of the possibility of living , that metaphysical issues arise with a renewed urgency. In this paper, I articulate three concepts of life in Adorno’s work; mere life, damaged life and ephemeral life. I relate these three concepts of life to the problem of a metaphysical or, perhaps more accurately, a speculative experience.
In the concept of an ephemeral life that is nevertheless immanent to a generalised context of damaged life, I argue that a speculative experience can arise that is neither a regulative ideal nor just the showing of the immanent context of damaged life itself.
In the final part of the paper, I try to develop four interlocking themes within an experience of ephemeral life, and reflect on their importance for contemporary philosophical work.
