Event overview
As part of the Visual Cultures Guest Lecture Series, Jason Gaiger will be speaking on the philosopher Konrad Fiedler.
By situating the work of the neglected neo-Kantian philosopher Konrad Fiedler in the context of recent debates in the philosophy of mind, Gaiger shows that his account of artistic activity as a process of giving structure to sensible experience independently of conceptual determination provides a valuable set of resources for developing a fully-fledged cognitivist aesthetics that succeeds in acknowledging the ‘spontaneity’ of sensibility.
Jason Gaiger is Lecturer in Contemporary Art History and Theory at the University of Oxford and incoming Head of School at the Ruskin; his books include 'Aesthetics and Painting' (2008), an English edition of 'Herder’s Sculpture' (2002) and, as co-editor, 'Art in Theory: 1648-1815' (2000) and 'Art in Theory: 1815-1900' (1998).
