Event overview
As part of the Visual Cultures Guest Lecture Series, Aislinn O'Donnell will be speaking on the philosopher Gilbert Simondon.
This paper asks whether Gilbert Simondon’s writings can help us to understand the institution of the prison and the needs of prisoners. It is informed in part by doing philosophy with people in prison and people who have at some stage in their lives spent time inside. O'Donnell is interested in thinking about: 1. how one retains a sense of oneself in prison; 2. whether Simondon’s concept of metastability helps us to understand relational dynamics in that institutional space; and 3. what it means to make film and artwork in the prison. In this final section, O'Donnell will also consider the work of Frederick Wiseman and Nicolas Philibert.
Aislinn O'Donnell received her PhD in philosophy from the University of Warwick and currently lectures in Philosophy of Education in Mary Immaculate College (University of Limerick). She is interested in cultivating public interest in and engagement with philosophy and is developing philosophy classes and collaborative research with people who may not have previously encountered philosophy, and who may also have left school early.
