'Faux Vintage'. 62 minutes
This is a social history of old electric guitars as told through
interviews with a handful of London restorers, repairers, collectors and traders of vintage instruments. As collectible vintage guitars have risen in value (some are worth hundreds of thousands of pounds), the features that make them desirable (to the degree these are understood) are reproduced in new guitars, not just the specifications, but the marks of hard use, worn paint, cigarette burns, cracked finishes, rusted hardware, etc. These are, in the main, not counterfeits, but reproductions. These faux vintage relics provide a reference point in the film for discussions of the emergence of artisanal/craftsman expertise in identifying, repairing, valuing and maintaining interest in exemplary guitars of the past 60 years. The film also features Guthrie Govan playing a selection of vintage instruments.
