Judith Niechcial - 'Lucy Faithfull: Mother to Hundreds' - Researching a Biography
Judith Niechcial will talk about the process of biographical research, in relation to her new biography of Baroness Lucy Faithfull.
An inspiration to child care workers everywhere, Lucy Faithfull was the first qualified social worker to be made a life peer. She had the ear of Margaret Thatcher, but she opposed, and encouraged others to oppose, so many Conservative social policies that the whips dubbed her 'Lady Faithless'. During debates on the Children Act, she bought in groups of body-pierced care leavers to give fellow peers a dose of reality.
Her career illustrates the recent history of child care. She worked with evacuees during WW2, was Children's Officer for Oxford, and founded the Lucy Faithfull Foundation which pioneered therapeutic work with sex offenders in order to protect children.
