Event overview
A one day, multi-disciplinary seminar hosted by the Anthropology Department but relating to current Visual Anthropology, Computing, Creative Writing, and Fine Arts debates.
This seminar accompanies an exhibition at the Constance Howard Resource and Research Centre in Textiles - "Their Past, Your Future" by Dr Sue Jones, reflecting on a 25 year relationship with a group of Bedouin women in Jordan – the Jebel Bani Hamida – who have been involved since 1985 in a rug weaving project.
There will be a special lunchtime preview of the exhibition for seminar participants at the Constance Howard Centre from 12.30 – 2.00 pm and the exhibition opening, with music and drinks reception, is at 6.00pm.
The seminar reconsiders how closely and in what ways peoples’ lives and narratives are interwoven with material objects - how material matters.
Material culture has always been a specific, if often separate, area of anthropological concern. The increasing dialogue of anthropology with other disciplines – particularly art, economics, power and governance and development approaches - provides the arena for a further reflection on material objects and their central importance in the lives of people and communities.
Presentations and visual displays consider the relationship of people and objects and the resulting narratives in a range of contexts – for example linked to Romania, Jordan, Mongolia, Iran, Germany, Kuwait, India, Lebanon and Trinidad.
