Event overview
TRASHING PERFORMANCE PUBLIC PROGRAM with Ben Walters, Gavin Butt & Dickie Beau
PART OF TRASHING PERFORMANCE
Ben Walters, Gavin Butt & Dickie Beau
An evening of film and live performance featuring the results of a specially commissioned collaboration between performer Dickie Beau, academic Gavin Butt and journalist Ben Walters. BURN is happy to premiere a documentary film about artists who use the moving image to reshape contemporary audiences, incorporating a new performance by Dickie Beau alongside moving-image work by those featured in the film. The documentary is edited by Tom Frederic.
Moving beyond performance-to-camera made more narrowly for the art world, the project explores an alternative story of the broadening of media publics since the Warhol Factory of the 1970s. The project pays attention to how club and cabaret performers have reshaped publics through strategies of mainstream intervention and 'talking back' to industrial film and TV; used the camera to stake out new regions of fantasy and fun; and gone online to address everyone and no one.
The film features interviews with Dickie Beau, Dara Birnbaum, Nao Bustamante, Vaginal Davis, Cole Escola, Vincent Fremont, Alp Haydar, Holestar, David Hoyle, Kalup Linzy, Glenn O’Brien, and Scottee.
