Event overview
Legendary free software pioneer Richard Stallman is our guest for the first official CAST Public Lecture. Stallman is the founder of the Free Software movement, the GNU project, the Free Software Foundation, and the League for Programming Freedom.
The question of what freedom is, is in constant contention. History and cultural identity have always played a key role in what societies demand in terms of freedom. However over the years there have been individuals willing to diverge, declaring and re-defining what it means to be ‘free’.
Richard Stallman is one of these key figures. Stallman’s refusal to give up his ‘hacker ethics’ and accept the pull of money led him to reject the common concept of capitalist freedom. In 1983 he started the GNU Project and became the legendary founder of the Free Software Movement. In this lecture Stallman will discuss his concept of Free Software and how this relates to our personal freedom.
He is the author of 'Free as in Freedom' and will be signing copies of his book and meeting attendees at the end of the lecture.
