"Moments of Desperation and Peril: Hollywood and Concert Performance"
In recent years, musicologists have turned attention increasingly towards the activities of performing and listening, and their physically embodied nature. Calls for a ‘drastic’ approach to musicology (Abbate) or the idea of ‘musicking’ (Small) have sought to refocus our energies away from a search for musical meaning in abstract works, and towards the ‘material present event’ that is performance. What Abbate refers to as the ‘desperation and peril’ is often demonstrated very clearly through the classical concert as portrayed in fiction film — ways a performer works with his/her instrument, or overcomes some physical impairment and with regard to how listeners engage with the concert.
Examining a number of film scenes, ranging from Mickey Mouse cartoons to Beethoven biopics, Winters will suggest that what Abbate and Small call for is something Hollywood has long recognised and depicted. In turn, perhaps this feeds back into our experiences and expectations when attending a concert.
Winters is Lecturer in Music at The Open University and was recently, 2009-11, a lecturer at Christ Church, Oxford. Over the years he has done much work focussing on music and film.
