Event overview
InC Seminar
It is hardly exaggerated to state that, since the early 20th century, the concept of event has become one of the key concepts in continental philosophy. It has conveyed a whole series of philosophical understandings of issues related to 'history' (becoming, the emergence of the new, etc.) while, at first sight somewhat curiously, in about the same period of time historiography has developed various strategies to overcome the discontents of a mere 'history of events'. Against this backdrop, I will try to develop an understanding of events that emphasizes both their contingency and their - extrinsic, but also intrinsic - multiplicity. I will criticize certain more recent tendencies towards fetishizing the event, in order to take into account both the 'strong' and the 'weak' components of the concept. And I will finally explore one of the supposed foundational events of political modernity, the French Revolution, in order to depict it not as one event but rather as a swarm of events.
