Celebrating John Cage’s 100th anniversary and the 50th anniversary of Stravinsky’s only visit to the Soviet Union in 1962, Alexander Ivashkin shares his memoirs on John Cage’s and Igor Stravinsky’s visits to Soviet Russia.
Professor Ivashkin is a cellist, conductor and writer who studied at both Russian Academy for Music, Moscow and Russian State Institute for Arts Studies, Moscow.
As a cellist, his recitals, appearances with orchestras and radio and TV recordings, have led to him playing in more than 40 countries. Ivashkin has been the first performer and dedicatee of many pieces by great contemporary composers, such as Alfred Schnittke.
As a recording artist for the labels Chandos, BMG and Naxos he has award-winning recordings to his credit. He is Professor of Music and Director of the Centre for Russian Music at Goldsmiths.
