Professor Alexander Ivashkin, Head of Classical Performance at Goldsmiths, performs the complete music for solo cello by Benjamin Britten in this free lunchtime concert.
Suites for solo cello Nos 1 - 3, op. 72 ( 1964), op. 80 ( 1967), op. 87 ( 1971).
and Tema 'Sacher' (1976)
Benjamin Britten (1913 – 1976) wrote all his cello compositions for the great Russian cellist Mstislav Rostropovich. Alexander Ivashkin recalls his meetings with Rostropovich, (who opened the Council Chamber as a performance space) and introduces the Suites.
