Event overview
Autumn Seminars Department of Anthropology, Goldsmiths, University of London Wednesdays 4pm, Richard Hoggart Building (RHB) Room 256
Goldsmiths' Department of Anthropology is consistently at the forefront of critical anthropology, public engagement, visual practice and theory. The Department Seminar Series is open to staff and students, providing a forum for exploring the diversity of contemporary anthropological work. We invite exciting speakers from around the world each week to present their research. The diversity and significance of contemporary anthropological research is reflected through the series.
Boropani is a coal mining district situated on the Bangladesh-India Border. It has one of the largest land-ports between the two countries, dedicated exclusively to the import and export of coal. Whilst all the mines are on the Indian side, the labourers are in the main Bangladeshi. They cross the border illegally to work them. One group of people attracted to area are hijras, traditionally known as the 'third sex', who come from all across Bangladesh to participate in the trade. This paper looks at why this may be, presenting an alternative argument to how hijras are presented in popular understandings and academic literature as well as relations between Bangladesh and India.
