The Department of Music present Tom Robinson, broadcaster and songwriter, on preparing for the industry, especially regarding release dates and getting radio play.

Tom Robinson (b.1950) is a new music advocate who hosts three weekly programmes on BBC Radio 6 Music in London: the BBC Introducing Mixtape, his own three hour Saturday night music show, and NowPlaying@6Music which won a Sony Radio Award in 2012 for Best Use Of Multiplatform/Social Media
Tom first became known in the 1970s as a musician and LGBT activist with the Top 20 hits 2-4-6-8 Motorway and Glad To Be Gay. With the Tom Robinson Band (TRB) he was also a prominent supporter of Rock Against Racism and Amnesty International.
He released 19 albums with various bands between 1975 and 2001 and has written songs with Elton John, Peter Gabriel and Dan Hartman. In 1983 he also had a Top 20 hit as a solo artist with War Baby.
His first radio show was for the BBC World Service in 1987 and he has since hosted programmes on BBC Radios 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 Live and most recently 6 Music where he has worked full-time since 2002.
Tom is a member of the Ivors panel at BASCA and hosts occasional workshops for songwriters as well as the New Music blog Fresh On The Net. He lives in South London with his wife and two children.
