Event overview
Goldsmiths Literature Seminar
To Haraway we are never alone, but always with our "significant Others", the vast majority of which are non-human. No animal on earth has evolved without the intimate interaction, or even contagion of other species. The luminescence of the Euprymna scolopes squid is dependent on the infection by Vibro bacteria. A human gut cannot develop properly without colonization by bacteria. Our "companion species" live next to us, on us and in us.
This reading group will explore whether Haraway's concepts of significant other and companion species influence how we think our relationship with animals, whether parasites, pets or pâté, and ask if we have to re-think animal - and also perhaps human - ethics in light of Haraway's thesis.
Chapter 1 of Donna Haraway's When Species Meet will be available to read on the GLITS page on the VLE.
