Event overview
Visual Cultures Public Programme -Freya Jarman, hosted by Mark Fisher
You took the words right out of my mouth: lip-syncing scenes and the proximity of queer and comedy.
Searching for lip-syncing scenes, either in film/TV or as homespun webcam acts on YouTube, one tends to find such scenes pitched as either funny, or queer, or (very often) some combination of both. Exploring scenes from a variety of films and television shows, this paper seeks to explain the proximity of queer and comedy that is represented by such scenes.
Freya Jarman is a Senior Lecturer in Music at the University of Liverpool. Her research focuses on gender and sexuality, with a particular focus on queer theory, in music of a variety of repertoires. Freya is particularly interested in the voice, and her book Queer voices: technologies, vocalities, and the musical flaw (Palgrave 2011) argues that the voice is a richly queer site, exploring this through the case studies of Karen Carpenter, Diamanda Galas, and Maria Callas.
