Event overview
Annie Guo and friends (China) Reflections
You are warmly welcome to a special insight into the work of the Goldsmiths' Confucius Institute and its special relationship with the Beijing Dance Academy. The Department of Theatre and Performance among others in the College enjoys a developing relationship with the Institute and is delighted to host Director Annie Guo who will introduce some of the Institute's guest performing arts specialists and practices:
Traditional Chinese Culture today has evolved through many centuries of Chinese performance arts practices and provides a valuable insight and reflection into the characteristics and mind-sight of the Chinese civilisation both then and now. On Wednesday, the Goldsmiths Confucius Institute will be presenting art-forms that are amongst the most characteristic of Chinese culture: Traditional Chinese Dance, Martial Arts, Traditional Chinese Folkdance and Chinese Folk Instruments. These historically rich and diverse art-forms have been practiced for over 5 centuries and have played a large part in inspiring performance techniques and practices worldwide.
During the hour long session, the audience will be given a brief introduction to the background and history of what will be presented followed by a showcase of the various art-forms presented both separately and in tandem by specialist instructors. The instruments, dances and martial arts to be presented include: traditional Chinese string instruments (such as the erhu, banhu and jinghu), folk dances of the Chinese ethnic minorities, water-sleeve dancing, fan dancing, Taichi and fan Taichi. Audiences are welcome to try a hand at any of the art-forms during the Q&A session. Confucius Institute, Goldsmiths.
