Event overview
Tin Shed is pleased to announce its third exhibition of 2013, we will be showing Tobias Revell’s documentary New Mumbai.
During the Indian Civil War, the Dharavi slums of Mumbai were flooded with refugees looking to escape the conflict. The Mumbai authorities, distracted by defence of the city and facing an already overpopulated and poverty stricken slum could do little to maintain a semblance of civilised life in the area. Sometime later a cache of biological samples appeared through the criminal networks of Mumbai, in the vain hope that it might provide new marketable narcotic opportunities. The collective drive and expertise of the refugees managed to turn theses genetically engineered fungal samples into a new type of infrastructure providing heat, light and building material for the refugees. Dharavi rapidly evolved its own micro-economy based around the mushrooms. This documentary tells the story of some of the characters involved from Mumbai and the rest of the world and how Dharavi came to be such a unique place.
Tobias Revell was born in a Hampshire town built around a system of roundabouts in late 1986. His second ever memory is gazing at a tropical fish tank in the bar of a Welsh bed and breakfast while the room crowded with adults watching the fall of the Berlin Wall on the one small television available. His first memory involves filling the doors of a Porsche with sand.
He’s obsessive over select periods of human history, which he learns in an entirely non-sequential order. He holds a BA Hons. (1st) in Design for Interaction and Moving Image from the London College of Communication (where he is now a third-years tutor) and an MA in Design Interactions at the Royal College of Art from which he graduated in July 2012.
Other passions and neuroses include; mystery, lost history, theoretical physics, explaining theoretical physics, word games, objectivity in conspiracy theories, failed architecture, cryptozoology, unexplained phenomena, forgotten events, music, paradoxes, video games, clever jokes and cycling, He’s only ever seen one complete football match.
