Barley Norton is a senior lecturer in the Department of Music at Goldsmiths. He has carried out extensive field reserch in Southeast Asia and has produced books and films on Vietnamese music and culture.
Nguyen Thanh Thuy is one of the world’s best performers of the Vietnamese zither, the dan tranh. She has performed across Asia, Europe and the US, and has released numerous CDs of traditional and new music. Since 2000 she has held a teaching position at the Hanoi National Conservatory of Music, and will be performing at Goldsmiths on Thursday 16 May in the Council Chamber.
Music and Protest in 1968 (edited by Barley Norton and Beate Kutschke) offers new perspectives on the role that music played in the events of that year, which included protests against the ongoing Vietnam War, the May riots in France and the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. From anti-war songs in Vietnam to antiauthoritarian music in Germany, the book explores music's key role as a means of socio-political dissent not just in the US and the UK but in Asia, North and South America, Europe and Africa.
