Event overview
Improbable Theatre, inassociation with Goldsmiths and London Drama invite theatre practitioners, teachers and young people to a forum about the crisis facing youth drama.
British theatre is in crisis. Nearly a quarter (23%) of secondary schools have suspended drama courses and there is a severe decline in drama teacher training. In addition to this, youth theatres are closing on a weekly basis and the National Association of Youth Theatres has lost its funded CEO post.
Led by Danny Braverman, lecturer in Applied Theatre at Goldsmiths, and Lee Simpson, founder and co-artistic director of Improbable, this event aims to tackle the growing concerns that developments in youth drama over previous decades will be lost and theatre will once again be the preserve of the well-off.
Danny and Lee will argue that drama is not a disposable luxury for young people and that the drama young people experience in their schools and youth groups is very often the one thing that gets them out of bed in the morning. It teaches more than chunks of knowledge, it explores feelings, creates confident communicators, promotes engaged citizenship and makes young people eminently more employable.
So, it’s time to do something. This open space discussion calls on theatre professionals, drama teachers and young people themselves to come together to grapple with these issues and come up with ways to work together to make sure that future generations have drama education as a right, not a privilege.
