Event overview
Photographing Indians in the American West
When 19th-century explorers, army men, wagon trains, railroad builders and then settlers ventured into the trans-Mississippi West they were accompanied by photographers. The camera was able to record the life-ways of the Sioux, Cheyenne, Crow and other Plains tribes, sometimes romanticising them, often demonizing them. Something similar occurred when Pacific Northwest, Great Basin and California native peoples were confronted by the medium. This illustrated talk examines the photographic legacy, including both more recent photography and some images made by Native Americans themselves, asking what it contributes to an understanding of the cultures and experiences of the peoples depicted.
