Event overview
'Musical psychogeography and Amy Winehouse'
Presented by the Popular Music Research Unit, Adrian Sledmere gives a lecture on 'Musical psychogeography and Amy Winehouse'
In this talk, Adrian Sledmere explores the way in which place forms part of our response to music and music videos: how the experience of music can reference a number of extra-musical coordinates, a web of connectivity and associations which together shape our subjective response to it.
In order to develop this area, his talk will explore the notion of psycho-geography in relation to the video for Amy Winehouse's 'Back to Black' and will ask if its techniques and ideas can usefully be deployed in understanding and reflecting upon our subjective responses to music.
Adrian Sledmere has recently finished his Phd in the music dept at Goldsmiths entitled 'Interrogating talent: struggles and strategy in the popular music industry'. His research considers how changing ideas of cultural democracy and human exceptionality continue to redefine the political economy of the music business. Other research areas include the role of technology in the marketing and production of music and the globalisation of culture.
All welcome, not just for graduates.
This is the rescheduled talk from 3 December 2013.
