Event overview
What anxieties do women in leadership roles face within the fields of ‘arts and culture’? A Parliament Week and Anxiety Arts Festival London 2014 Taster event co-hosted by Mental Health Foundation and Goldsmiths.
Salon discussion chaired by Professor Anna Furse (Theatre and Performance, Goldsmiths) with special guests Jocelyn Pook (composer), Melanie Pappenheim (Soprano), Jenny Edwards CBE (CEO, Mental Health Foundation), Jenny Sealey MBE (Artistic Director of Graeae Theatre Company and Co-Director of the Paralympic Games Opening Ceremony), Annie Caulfield (Writer), Charlotte Vincent (Artistic Director of Vincent Dance Theatre), Lauren Craig (Artist, Activist, Ethical Florist)
Women still face problems breaking through the glass ceiling in the arts & cultural industries, reflecting continuing inequality faced across all sectors of society, including Parliament.
From unequal and low pay, burnout from balancing long hours at work with family and other life commitments and the real health and wellbeing issues created from passionately pursuing ones chosen career path.
All these questions will be framed within the wider context of multicultural Britain seeking to understand how women have be able to forge high profile career paths and enabled themselves to make significant contributions to the cultural heritage of the UK.
This evening’s discussion, delivered in a ‘Salon’ style panel, will give the public the chance to hear the personal stories and shared experiences of some the UK’s leading female leaders in their creative field.
We aim to address how the panel navigate their personal and professional creative ambitions, challenge deep rooted assumptions about women working in the arts needing to have a partner to support them, and how, if at all, they have negotiated having children or not.
