Chitra Sundaram (UK) Sthreedom: ‘The Good Wife’
The Performance Research Forum (PRF)
A meeting ground between contemporary practitioners, researchers, students and staff in the college as well as the general public via a programme of cutting edge talks, events and performances. All events are hosted by Professon Anna Furse.
Chitra Sundaram is recognized as a dance artist of distinction in India and Britain, and in dance circles abroad. Tutored in India by orthodox masters of Bharatanatyam in the 60’s and 70’s, Chitra came to serious notice at the milestone East-West Dance Encounter in 1984. She has since explored the approaches, vocabularies and devices of other dances and theatres in intensive laboratory situations, including western Contemporary Dance, Butoh, Grotowski, and physical/visual theatre; together with her diaspora sensitivities, these intellectually inform and subtly imprint her work. Chitra’s last full-length production Moham—A Magnificent Obsession was presented by noteworthy mainstream venues in the UK, India and North America, receiving significant attention for its iconoclastic proposition and presentation; she was invited to present a paper on the work at the South Asian Dance conference at Swarthmore College. Essentially a soloist, her collaborations include Akademi’s Coming of Age at the South Bank Centre and the Royal Opera House’s Back Garden Project with Mavin Khoo Dance. As choreographer Chitra was commissioned to create an ensemble work Awaz/Voice for Trafalgar Festival 2006. Her solo work with choreographer Hari Krishnan, Skull, toured nationally as aMhas – the Immortal Sin in the UK as part of Soma/Numa’s Body of Experience and was shown in New York by NYPLPA and in Chennai by the Alliance Francaise. As long-time editor of pulse, the premier South Asian dance magazine from Britain, she propelled it to a highly respected international stature during her tenure. Chitra teaches dance at academic and practice-led institutions including Goldsmiths, University of London. Monsoon Moves is her short dance film for the BBC. Chitra is a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Arts and a Trustee of Westminster Arts.
