Goldsmiths Literature Seminar
Dr Lynn Turner (Dept of Visual Cultures, Goldsmiths)
This paper examines the interweaving of animals and telephones in works by Hélène Cixous and Jacques Derrida, especially as they engage each other's practices. Responding in sympathy to their shared concerns but with particular focus on the perhaps more enigmatic writing of Cixous, this essay draws out a deconstructive ethical terrain while sybilantly playing upon the limitrophic figure of a 'telefoam' line. Consequently ethics, politics and poetics come together. 'Telefoam' aims to develop the kinds of conversations now possible regarding our relationship with other animals and with technology, conversations that dismantle the notion of the 'animal-machine' that is our heavy-handed Cartesian bequest.
