Event overview
Part of the INC Seminar Series "Grounding: Philosophy and the Law"
Ever since Kant penned his treatise "Perpetual Peace" philosophers have contemplated whether it is possible to end conflict between nations and classes. Kant proposed that a body of international law would be necessary to realize such a state of concord. This talk will argue that the young Benjamin’s reflections on violence amount to a radical reinterpretation of Kant’s theory. It will be argued that Benjamin provides a compelling account of the causes of eternal war. Moreover, it will be argued that he provides a controversial Kantian account of how to negate the causes of unending strife between nations and classes.
Dr Blair Ogden is a visiting tutor in philosophy at the University of Oxford. He works in the areas of critical theory, German philosophy and aesthetics.
