Event overview
Part of the INC Seminar Series "Grounding: Philosophy and the Law"
Can the work of Emmanuel Levinas meet the work of Rwandan thinkers? Could they harmonize or clash on a particular theme? Should we pay attention to such an encounter? This paper will examine the issue of intertwining a specific European body of thought with another body of thought seemingly alien to it. The theme that brings together these two vast bodies of thought is the idea of God. On the one hand, Imana, a Rwandese divinity and concept altered by Christianity and, on the other, a radical alterity allergic to all kinds of figuration. With this theme, this paper will highlight the pros and cons of inter-cultural philosophy.
Jean-Paul Martinon is a senior lecturer in Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths.
