Event overview
Professor Danny Dorling
It is widely accepted that high rates of inequality are damaging to society, although some skeptics remain to be convinced. Perhaps it is because the most damaging form of economic inequality occurs when the very richest 1% take more and more, even if the other 99% are becoming more equal. So what exactly is it about inequality that causes most harm?
Danny Dorling holds the Halford Mackinder Professorship in Geography at University of Oxford, as well as being a Visiting Professor in the Department of Sociology, at Goldsmiths.
Danny's work concerns issues of housing, health, employment, education, wealth and poverty. Much of Danny's work is available open access (see http://www.dannydorling.org). With a group of colleagues he helped create the website http://www.worldmapper.org which shows who has most and least in the world.
Recent sole authored books include, Injustice: Why social inequalities persist in 2010; So you think you know about Britain and Fair Play, both in 2011; in 2012 The No-nonsense Guide to Equality, The Visualization of Social Spatial Structure and The Population of the UK; Unequal Health, The 32 Stops and Population Ten Billion in 2013; and All That is Solid in 2014.
